People camp outside shoe store in downtown Greenville for new Nike shoes | News
Several people spent the night outside a shoe store in downtown Greenville to be the first to buy new Nike shoes that went on sale Monday morning.
The line of shoppers formed in the aisle near the APB store on North Street on Sunday.
The first person in line said they arrived at 8 a.m. on Sunday. By nightfall, a small crowd had joined him, lining the outside wall of the business with folding chairs and cold weather gear. Shaquille Rolle said he’s had to battle the cold since then.
“It’s been a tough morning, it was a cold Sunday morning and a cold Monday now, but it’s going to be worth it, it’s going to be worth it.”
Determined shoe shoppers are looking for the new multicolor and corduroy Nike Air Max shoes.
Shoppers can also get a matching hat if they want.
Shoe shoppers said only a limited number of shoes would be released, so they were prepared to queue.
APB Greenville manager Cal Williams explained why the limited-release shoe is so popular.
“They (Nike) had a contest last year where these influencers built a shoe and the public voted for it and they brought it to life.” He told us that the designer, Sean Wotherspoon, gave out pairs of shoes early on and created a lot of hype. “He got a bunch of pairs early and gave them to a lot of celebrities and the celebrities got a lot of people who wanted them beforehand. So Nike did a really good job of building the hype for the shoe because that now you can see that everyone wants to get exactly these shoes.”
