OHSU‘s Doernbecher Children’s Hospital and Nike have teamed up for another year to elevate the ideas of seven patient young designers for the 17th edition Doernbecher Freestyle Program.

The Doernbecher Freestyle Collection 2022 will be available to the general public later this spring and will include a range of classic and contemporary Nike footwear and apparel designed by young people inspired by their battles with medical conditions such as Von Hippel-Lindau disease, spina bifida, sickle cell anemia and other obstacles these children were bravely forced to tackle at such a young age, according to an OHSU press release.

In the photos provided below, take a look at each patient-designer’s signature shoe at this year’s Doernbecher Freestyle reveal and learn about the battles they face with their health and how those battles inspired their designs.

Ayman Wamala | Age: 13 | Hometown: Salem, Oregon

Nike Blazer Mid ’77

Born in Kenya, Ayman was diagnosed with sickle cell disease at an early age and began treatment at OHSU Doernbecher Children’s Hospital four years ago after his family moved to Portland. An avid football player who also plans to pursue a career in acting, Ayman also enjoys cooking and spending time learning about the woods and honing his own outdoor survival skills.

As part of this year’s collection, Ayman puts his own spin on a classic Nike silhouette, the Blazer Mid ’77. The design incorporates Ayman’s self-proclaimed mysterious alter-ego, a mind-reading character featured on the shoe’s tongue. Subtle tiger stripes on the midsole have a secret, too: they glow bright blue under UV light.

The words ‘Hope’, ‘Strength’ and ‘Perseverance’ surrounding the Ayman logo on the shoe help inspire those who wear them.

Catalina Vazquez | Age: 16 | Hometown: Kelso, Washington

Nike Doernbecher Freestyle 2022

Nike SB Zoom Stefan Janoski

Catalina’s decision to use this wild turquoise green color for her Nike Zoom Stefan Janoski 2022 shoes was inspired by her penchant for the Galapagos Islands, a place rich in discovery. The midsole features her own hand-drawn flowers that reflect her love of nature and the butterfly graphic on top embodies the changes Catalina has gone through in her life, especially after being diagnosed with Von Hippel-Lindau disease. .

Von Hippel-Lindau is a very rare hereditary disease that causes tumors to grow in several organs of the body. In Catalina’s case, they affected her eyes, spinal cord and brain, requiring five surgeries to remove them.

Despite having fought so many battles in hospital beds, Catalina remains strong and determined to let each operation serve as an opportunity to emerge stronger than before. It also helps motivate her to raise awareness about her illness as she works her way through.

Cidni O’Brien | Age: 16 | Hometown: Lebanon, Oregon

Nike Doernbecher Freestyle 2022

Nike Air Force 1 Fontanka

Cidni was diagnosed with an abnormal left coronary artery aortic origin in 2018. It means a crucial artery that directs blood to his heart isn’t doing the job. While the issue was thankfully identified, it also meant Cidni faced the prospect of major heart surgery at just 16.

But just six months after his surgery, Cidni was back on the pitch with Lebanon’s high school football team. Now Cidni begins her inspiring story told through these Air Force 1 Fontanka shoes that pay tribute to her teammates and her family and the animals in her life who kept her attitude positive.

On these shoes, you’ll find homages to Cidni’s horse, Tank, his mother, Nikki, and one of his favorite foods adorning the outsole: shrimp pasta. But those are just a few of the many secret homages you’ll find woven into his new pair of kicks. You will have to hunt for others.

Nike Doernbecher Freestyle 2022

Maylee Phelps | Age: 15 | Hometown: Portland, Oregon

Nike Doernbecher Freestyle 2022

Nike Court Zoom Vapor Cage 4

Maylee Phelps was born with spina bifida, a disease in which the spine and spinal cord do not develop properly. Although she is confined to a wheelchair, it has not slowed her athletic aspirations. Maylee is currently ranked 11th in the junior wheelchair tennis player rankings and aspires to represent the United States at the Los Angeles Paralympic Games in 2028. To get here, Maylee had to undergo multiple surgeries at OHSU Doernbecher over the years. years to improve his mobility. but that did not stop his training, nor suppress his will to improve.

Maylee’s shoe, the Nike Air Zoom Vapor Cage 4 features a host of personal touches, including hand-drawn stars and a glossy multi-colored marbled outsole that incorporates all of her favorite colors. The tongue of the shoe features a spine graphic and a blue spina bifida awareness ribbon adorns the heel.

Nike Doernbecher Freestyle 2022

Michael Wilson | Age: 11 | Hometown: Dayton, Oregon

Nike Doernbecher Freestyle 2022

Air Jordan 5 Retro Low

Michael didn’t even spend two months in this world before facing his first major hurdle in life when he was diagnosed with Krabbe disease, a rare genetic disorder that destroys the protective covering of nerve cells in the brain. and the nervous system. Although the disease is often fatal, Michael and his family were able to get a diagnosis early enough to qualify him for a life-saving stem cell cord blood transplant performed at OHSU Doernbecher. It was a resounding success.

Now, a decade away from the procedure, Michael is enjoying life as an 11-year-old who loves – among other things – airplanes, sharks and mac and cheese, all of which factor into his Air design. Jordan 5 Retro Low.

One of the most attractive features of the shoe will surely be the collection of unique patches that can be swapped on or off the tongue of the shoe to allow you to customize it to your own style.

Nike Doernbecher Freestyle 2022

Sam David Phelps | Age: 14 | Hometown: Portland, Oregon

Nike Doernbecher Freestyle 2022

LeBron XIX (19)

Much like his sister pictured above, Sam David Phelps doesn’t let his condition get in the way of his athletic accomplishments, especially where he plays: on the basketball court. Also, like his sister, Sam was born with spina bifida. Although his future goal is to play for the United States Men’s National Wheelchair Basketball Team, he is currently honing his craft at home playing for the Portland WheelBlazers.

It’s only fitting that Sam could design his own version of LeBron James’ signature shoe, the Lebron 19, for this year’s Freestyle collection, considering James is his favorite athlete. Sam took an opulent approach to the design of this shoe, some might even say it’s a design fit for a ‘king’ with metallic gold panels, lighting bolts and a tribute to his condition with a logo. of sports wheelchair.

Nike Doernbecher Freestyle 2022

Zoe Taaffe | Age: 17 | Hometown: Tualatin, Oregon

Nike Doernbecher Freestyle 2022

Nike Dunk Low

There’s no doubt that Zoe Taaffe is a Ducks fan.

Zoe’s love for the University of Oregon is quite evident in the design of her shoe, the Nike Dunk low. That’s not the only part of his personality showcased on the shoe, however. Looking closer at the shoe, you can find Zoe’s name hidden among the zebra prints on the midsole. The outsole is made of glow-in-the-dark material, and an Oregon Duck-inspired nurse logo on the sockliner pays homage to her dreams of one day becoming a nurse.

Like her shoe, Zoe’s condition is rare. So rare in fact that when she was diagnosed with granulomatosis with polyangiitis during her sophomore year in high school, she became one of 1.2 million pediatric patients to have it. This autoimmune disease causes severe inflammation of blood vessels and his care at OHSU Doernbecher required multiple blood and plasma transfusions along with steroids and chemotherapy.

LeBron James’ second signature shoe with Nike, the Zoom LeBron 2 from 2004, will be re-released for the very first time in 2022, according to sneaker industry sources. The retro LeBron 2 is slated for release in early September, according to a Nike brand document seen by Complex that details the company’s product plans for next year, but its release date could change given the number of shoes that have recently exceeded their original dates.

Neither James nor Nike have confirmed the return of the LeBron 2.

Tech-wise, the original LeBron 2 featured a removable Velcro strap at the ankle, heel, and forefoot, Zoom cushioning encased in a Pebax shell, and a midfoot Xytel shank. In addition to the mid cut, the LeBron 2 was also released as a low from 2005.

Nike has dabbled in retro LeBron footwear for the past few years, bringing back the Air Zoom Generation, its first signature shoe, for the first time in 2017 and most recently dropping retro versions of the LeBron 3, LeBron 7 and LeBron 8. .

Years ago, there were indications that Nike was planning a retro LeBron 2, but the samples floating around during this time were never more than samples. In 2014, James himself wore an updated version of the LeBron 2 covered in animal prints. In 2015, another pair has surfaced in the “Dunkman” colorway.

It was assumed for years that Nike’s long-term plan with James’ line would involve retros of his older models, especially following the lifetime deal he signed with the brand in 2015. Nike deepened its partnership with James in 2021, naming a massive new building at its Oregon headquarters after him.

GENEVA: A diamond bracelet that once belonged to France’s Marie Antoinette and a sapphire and diamond brooch with matching ear clips that once hung from a Russian Grand Duchess are among the items featured in jewelry auctions and other collectibles next week in Geneva.

A pair of high-top Nike sneakers by late NBA star Kobe Bryant, the Los Angeles Lakers guard who died in a helicopter crash in California last year, will also go under the hammer in the Swiss lakeside town. .

The blue, white and gold Nike Air Zoom Huarache 2K4 basketball shoes are expected to fetch 35,000 Swiss francs (about $38,000) in a Nov. 11 sale at Sotheby’s. Bryant wore the sneakers in a March 17, 2004 win over the LA Clippers, according to the auction house.

But as usual in the autumn auction season in Geneva, diamonds, emeralds, sapphires, rubies and other precious stones will be the highlights of next week’s sales at Sotheby’s and rival Christie’s.

Christie’s is rolling out a pair of heavy 18th century bracelets on Tuesday that are studded with three rows of small diamonds. The bracelets are presented as one of the last remnants of Marie-Antoinette’s rich jewelry cabinet still available for sale.

The auction house said the famed royal and wife of King Louis XVI was known to have carefully wrapped her jewelery herself in cotton, hoping to keep it out of revolutionary France – which would have ultimately claimed his life by the guillotine. The bracelets, commissioned around 1776, have been kept in the royal lineage for more than 200 years, Christie’s said.

“Despite Marie Antoinette’s capture during the French Revolution and her unfortunate death in 1793, the bracelets survived and were passed on to her daughter, Madame Royale, and then to the Duchess of Parma,” said Max Fawcett, head of the department. jewelry from Christie. , designating respectively Marie-Thérèse of France, the couple’s daughter, and Princess Louise of Artois, who died in 1864.

“To see them at auction today is a unique opportunity for collectors around the world to own a piece of French royal history,” Fawcett said.

The presale estimate for the bracelets is 4 million Swiss francs ($4.38 million). They each weigh 97 grams (3.42 ounces) and include ‘old-cut’ diamonds as well as silver and gold, Christie’s said.

Among the lots Sotheby’s plans to present on Wednesday, a “perfectly matched” pair of earrings, each set with 25.8-carat diamonds, is expected to fetch up to 5 million francs ($5.5 million).

It will also feature a brooch with a 26.8-carat oval sapphire surrounded by diamonds and matching ear clips that once belonged to Grand Duchess Maria Pavlovna and were driven out of Russia during the 1917 revolution. raise up to 480,000 francs ($525,800).

“She was the wife of Grand Duke Vladimir, the Tsar’s son, and she was really into jewelry. She had a fantastic jewelry collection,’ said Olivier Wagner, Sotheby’s Magnificent Jewels sales manager.

The 23-year-old, who is looking to win her fifth major title and her first at Roland-Garros, will wear the Air Zoom GP Turbo sneaker throughout the competition.

The shoe itself features Swarovski crystals on the swoosh, a tie-dye colourway, and an embossed heel.

In a clip posted to Twitter, Osaka can be seen laughing at herself and jumping up and down on the famous Phillipe-Chatrier court.

Osaka’s deal with Nike isn’t its only major sponsor. The Japanese star is ranked 15th in the list of the highest paid athletes in the world –– reportedly earning more than $50 million last year. Her endorsements include Tag Heuer and Louis Vuitton and she has also launched her own skincare brand as well as a swimwear line.

When it comes to his chances at Roland Garros, Osaka is unlikely to fight for silverware, having struggled on clay surfaces so far in his career.

Regardless of her progress, however, tennis fans will be eagerly awaiting the opportunity to see her in action.

The French Open starts on May 30 and ends on June 13.

He is a global celebrity and a unique voice in the fashion world. She will co-host the Met Gala in September. The list is long and will probably grow.

Now, the 23-year-old four-time Grand Slam winner is channeling all those facets into her new Nike apparel collection, and the results are as bold and beautiful as you’d expect. The capsule, his second with the brand, includes tees, shorts, hoodies, a crop top and a mesh bodysuit, all designed to mix and match a variety of styles that work seamlessly with pieces from his first Nike collection. , released last year.

“I hope the collection reflects dynamic and versatile women around the world,” Osaka told POPSUGAR. “We can be both strong and feminine, both bold and playful – and I want everyone to wear it to feel it.”

Osaka is “hands on” with its Nike collections, said Carly Ellis, senior apparel designer for NikeCourt. “The first time she came to campus, Naomi told us she wanted to be involved in creating new designs with us,” Ellis told POPSUGAR, adding that Osaka has become “more vocal” over the course. the last two years she has worked with Nike. “Naomi is one of the most multi-dimensional athletes of her generation… She is incredibly dynamic and her collection reflects that with just six pieces that can be layered and styled into over 30 looks. She is as multi-faceted as she is. “

As a bonus, Osaka and Nike have also released details of the outfit she will wear at the upcoming French Open, which kicks off on May 30. Osaka will wear a stunning black and white dress with sheer mesh inserts to keep her cool. the sun at Roland Garros, and his shoes are just as stylish: a pair of tie-dye Air Zoom GP Turbos studded with Swarovski crystals.

Osaka told POPSUGAR that when it comes to competition wear, she and Nike talk about what she needs for breathability and mobility, leverage materials and technology to achieve that, and then explore the fashion side. . “We have so much fun playing around with the style,” she said. “What I wear plays a big role in how I feel when I step onto the pitch.”

Osaka also challenges Nike to “think outside the box to blur sport and style,” Ellis added. “Together we are able to explore new materials and designs that help her perform at the highest level, incorporate her personal style and feel good wearing when she steps onto the court. “

Osaka’s Nike collection drops on June 17, and if you want to emulate his style on the court, you’re in luck: for the first time, you’ll also be able to shop his stylish Roland-Garros outfit at retail (May 24 for Nike members, May 31 worldwide). Check out a preview of it all, ahead!
