OHSU‘s Doernbecher Children’s Hospital and Nike have teamed up for another year to elevate the ideas of seven patient young designers for the 17th edition Doernbecher Freestyle Program.

The Doernbecher Freestyle Collection 2022 will be available to the general public later this spring and will include a range of classic and contemporary Nike footwear and apparel designed by young people inspired by their battles with medical conditions such as Von Hippel-Lindau disease, spina bifida, sickle cell anemia and other obstacles these children were bravely forced to tackle at such a young age, according to an OHSU press release.

In the photos provided below, take a look at each patient-designer’s signature shoe at this year’s Doernbecher Freestyle reveal and learn about the battles they face with their health and how those battles inspired their designs.

Nike Blazer Mid ’77

Born in Kenya, Ayman was diagnosed with sickle cell disease at an early age and began treatment at OHSU Doernbecher Children’s Hospital four years ago after his family moved to Portland. An avid football player who also plans to pursue a career in acting, Ayman also enjoys cooking and spending time learning about the woods and honing his own outdoor survival skills.

As part of this year’s collection, Ayman puts his own spin on a classic Nike silhouette, the Blazer Mid ’77. The design incorporates Ayman’s self-proclaimed mysterious alter-ego, a mind-reading character featured on the shoe’s tongue. Subtle tiger stripes on the midsole have a secret, too: they glow bright blue under UV light.

The words ‘Hope’, ‘Strength’ and ‘Perseverance’ surrounding the Ayman logo on the shoe help inspire those who wear them.

Catalina’s decision to use this wild turquoise green color for her Nike Zoom Stefan Janoski 2022 shoes was inspired by her penchant for the Galapagos Islands, a place rich in discovery. The midsole features her own hand-drawn flowers that reflect her love of nature and the butterfly graphic on top embodies the changes Catalina has gone through in her life, especially after being diagnosed with Von Hippel-Lindau disease. .

Von Hippel-Lindau is a very rare hereditary disease that causes tumors to grow in several organs of the body. In Catalina’s case, they affected her eyes, spinal cord and brain, requiring five surgeries to remove them.

Despite having fought so many battles in hospital beds, Catalina remains strong and determined to let each operation serve as an opportunity to emerge stronger than before. It also helps motivate her to raise awareness about her illness as she works her way through.

Nike Air Force 1 Fontanka

Cidni was diagnosed with an abnormal left coronary artery aortic origin in 2018. It means a crucial artery that directs blood to his heart isn’t doing the job. While the issue was thankfully identified, it also meant Cidni faced the prospect of major heart surgery at just 16.

But just six months after his surgery, Cidni was back on the pitch with Lebanon’s high school football team. Now Cidni begins her inspiring story told through these Air Force 1 Fontanka shoes that pay tribute to her teammates and her family and the animals in her life who kept her attitude positive.

On these shoes, you’ll find homages to Cidni’s horse, Tank, his mother, Nikki, and one of his favorite foods adorning the outsole: shrimp pasta. But those are just a few of the many secret homages you’ll find woven into his new pair of kicks. You will have to hunt for others.

Maylee Phelps was born with spina bifida, a disease in which the spine and spinal cord do not develop properly. Although she is confined to a wheelchair, it has not slowed her athletic aspirations. Maylee is currently ranked 11th in the junior wheelchair tennis player rankings and aspires to represent the United States at the Los Angeles Paralympic Games in 2028. To get here, Maylee had to undergo multiple surgeries at OHSU Doernbecher over the years. years to improve his mobility. but that did not stop his training, nor suppress his will to improve.

Maylee’s shoe, the Nike Air Zoom Vapor Cage 4 features a host of personal touches, including hand-drawn stars and a glossy multi-colored marbled outsole that incorporates all of her favorite colors. The tongue of the shoe features a spine graphic and a blue spina bifida awareness ribbon adorns the heel.

Michael didn’t even spend two months in this world before facing his first major hurdle in life when he was diagnosed with Krabbe disease, a rare genetic disorder that destroys the protective covering of nerve cells in the brain. and the nervous system. Although the disease is often fatal, Michael and his family were able to get a diagnosis early enough to qualify him for a life-saving stem cell cord blood transplant performed at OHSU Doernbecher. It was a resounding success.

Now, a decade away from the procedure, Michael is enjoying life as an 11-year-old who loves – among other things – airplanes, sharks and mac and cheese, all of which factor into his Air design. Jordan 5 Retro Low.

One of the most attractive features of the shoe will surely be the collection of unique patches that can be swapped on or off the tongue of the shoe to allow you to customize it to your own style.

Sam David Phelps | Age: 14 | Hometown: Portland, Oregon

Much like his sister pictured above, Sam David Phelps doesn’t let his condition get in the way of his athletic accomplishments, especially where he plays: on the basketball court. Also, like his sister, Sam was born with spina bifida. Although his future goal is to play for the United States Men’s National Wheelchair Basketball Team, he is currently honing his craft at home playing for the Portland WheelBlazers.

It’s only fitting that Sam could design his own version of LeBron James’ signature shoe, the Lebron 19, for this year’s Freestyle collection, considering James is his favorite athlete. Sam took an opulent approach to the design of this shoe, some might even say it’s a design fit for a ‘king’ with metallic gold panels, lighting bolts and a tribute to his condition with a logo. of sports wheelchair.

Nike Doernbecher Freestyle 2022

Zoe Taaffe | Age: 17 | Hometown: Tualatin, Oregon

Nike Doernbecher Freestyle 2022

Nike Dunk Low

There’s no doubt that Zoe Taaffe is a Ducks fan.

Zoe’s love for the University of Oregon is quite evident in the design of her shoe, the Nike Dunk low. That’s not the only part of his personality showcased on the shoe, however. Looking closer at the shoe, you can find Zoe’s name hidden among the zebra prints on the midsole. The outsole is made of glow-in-the-dark material, and an Oregon Duck-inspired nurse logo on the sockliner pays homage to her dreams of one day becoming a nurse.

Like her shoe, Zoe’s condition is rare. So rare in fact that when she was diagnosed with granulomatosis with polyangiitis during her sophomore year in high school, she became one of 1.2 million pediatric patients to have it. This autoimmune disease causes severe inflammation of blood vessels and his care at OHSU Doernbecher required multiple blood and plasma transfusions along with steroids and chemotherapy.

As she seemingly flaunted her matching ensemble of Bo + Teewhich costs less than $100, fans couldn’t help but notice that she put her Nike Air Max shoes on full display.

Her shoe choice was surprising, given that the KKW Beauty founder is known to always wear Kanye’s Yeezy brand — even since she filed for divorce from the “Runaway” rapper, 44, in February 2021.

“Wait a minute.. so Kim is not wearing Yeezy anymore? Shit this marriage really could be over,” someone tweeted about her social media photos. see not wearing Yeezy. I guess she’s taking a mantra out of sight, out of mind! another tweet read.

Comments were inundated with people noticing the seemingly subtle dig. “Oh, she’s muscular…not the Nike Air Max. Kim you gonna piss him off online,” someone wrote in reference to Ye. “She wears Nike now? It’s a sign ! a separate user added. “These are the Nikes for me,” another follower wrote with a crying and laughing emoji.

Kim’s updated shoes come after people wondered why she was still supporting the artist brand ‘Donda’ nearly a year after filing for divorce.

Additionally, the husband and wife, who share children North, Saint, Chicago and Psalm, have moved on with new love partners. Kim is dating a comedian pete davidson since the meeting for Saturday Night Live in October as Kanye struck up a romantic relationship with the actress Julia Fox.

Whether or not Kim sends a message with her Nike Air Max shoes, her low-key divorce from Ye has become more public knowledge. The Chicago native apparently called out the billionaire a few times in his new song “Eazy” – from raising “unruly” children to her relationship with 28-year-old Pete.

“When you give them everything, they only want more,” Ye rapped in the new song, which was released on January 14 in collaboration with The Game. The lyrics apparently referenced their four children. “Boujee and unruly, y’all need to do chores / Rich-ass kids, this ain’t your mama house / Climb on your bro’s shoulders, pull out that Top Ramen.”

In another part of the song, Kanye leaned into the King of Staten Island actor, singing, “God saved me from this accident / Just so I could beat Pete Davidson’s ass.”

Just an early Christmas present.

This year, a number of rare and well-worn Michael Jordan memorabilia have been sold for thousands – if not millions – of dollars. In October, a pair of Nike Air Ships worn by Jordan in his first season in the NBA set a new record for the most expensive pair of sneakers ever sold at auction with a sale price of $1.5 million. Just prior to their sale, a pair of Jordan Brand underwear worn by His Airness himself sold for $3,341, even with (or because of) “definite use”.

The fans – or at least the fans with the money – are willing to pay any price to get as close to Jordan as possible. Next on the market is a pair of Upper Deck Jordan 15 sneakers signed by Jordan and numbered 23 out of 23 editions. At $18,000, the rare shoe is a bargain compared to other Jordan signature sneakers.

A good bet for Bulls fans – The description for the pair of Upper Deck Jordan 15s promises they’ll become “the centerpiece of your Chicago Bulls fan cave” with their black upper and bold red accents near the eyelets, collar, and sole. Details like Jordan’s signature, written in silver ink on the lateral side of the left shoe, only add to the appeal.

Still, perhaps the best detail on the shoes is its ’23/23′ marking, signaling the rarity of the pair and also aligning with Jordan’s signature jersey number. An individually numbered tamper-evident hologram, along with an official license from sportswear retailer Fanatics, confirms the sneakers are the real deal.

Think of it as an investment — For $18,000, you’ll receive the rare sneakers alongside their limited-edition box, which comes in a similar black and red palette, but in more worn condition. And in a real bargain, the Upper Deck Jordan 15s come with free shipping, which can save you around $20 considering how carefully the pair will be packaged.

Those who have the will (and the means) to purchase the signature Upper Deck Jordan 15 sneakers can do so on the fanatics site. Years later, they can probably resell the pair too, probably for more than the shoes are selling for now. Time only inflates the value of Jordan’s memories, so the later the better.

GENEVA: A diamond bracelet that once belonged to France’s Marie Antoinette and a sapphire and diamond brooch with matching ear clips that once hung from a Russian Grand Duchess are among the items featured in jewelry auctions and other collectibles next week in Geneva.

A pair of high-top Nike sneakers by late NBA star Kobe Bryant, the Los Angeles Lakers guard who died in a helicopter crash in California last year, will also go under the hammer in the Swiss lakeside town. .

The blue, white and gold Nike Air Zoom Huarache 2K4 basketball shoes are expected to fetch 35,000 Swiss francs (about $38,000) in a Nov. 11 sale at Sotheby’s. Bryant wore the sneakers in a March 17, 2004 win over the LA Clippers, according to the auction house.

But as usual in the autumn auction season in Geneva, diamonds, emeralds, sapphires, rubies and other precious stones will be the highlights of next week’s sales at Sotheby’s and rival Christie’s.

Christie’s is rolling out a pair of heavy 18th century bracelets on Tuesday that are studded with three rows of small diamonds. The bracelets are presented as one of the last remnants of Marie-Antoinette’s rich jewelry cabinet still available for sale.

The auction house said the famed royal and wife of King Louis XVI was known to have carefully wrapped her jewelery herself in cotton, hoping to keep it out of revolutionary France – which would have ultimately claimed his life by the guillotine. The bracelets, commissioned around 1776, have been kept in the royal lineage for more than 200 years, Christie’s said.

“Despite Marie Antoinette’s capture during the French Revolution and her unfortunate death in 1793, the bracelets survived and were passed on to her daughter, Madame Royale, and then to the Duchess of Parma,” said Max Fawcett, head of the department. jewelry from Christie. , designating respectively Marie-Thérèse of France, the couple’s daughter, and Princess Louise of Artois, who died in 1864.

“To see them at auction today is a unique opportunity for collectors around the world to own a piece of French royal history,” Fawcett said.

The presale estimate for the bracelets is 4 million Swiss francs ($4.38 million). They each weigh 97 grams (3.42 ounces) and include ‘old-cut’ diamonds as well as silver and gold, Christie’s said.

Among the lots Sotheby’s plans to present on Wednesday, a “perfectly matched” pair of earrings, each set with 25.8-carat diamonds, is expected to fetch up to 5 million francs ($5.5 million).

It will also feature a brooch with a 26.8-carat oval sapphire surrounded by diamonds and matching ear clips that once belonged to Grand Duchess Maria Pavlovna and were driven out of Russia during the 1917 revolution. raise up to 480,000 francs ($525,800).

“She was the wife of Grand Duke Vladimir, the Tsar’s son, and she was really into jewelry. She had a fantastic jewelry collection,’ said Olivier Wagner, Sotheby’s Magnificent Jewels sales manager.

The first known pair of regular season shoes worn by Michael Jordan auctioned on Sunday for $1.472 million, breaking the record for the most expensive sneakers ever sold, according to Sotheby’s.

The shoes, “Nike Air Ships”, were from Jordan’s fifth game of the 1984 rookie season with the Chicago Bulls, a 129-113 loss to the Denver Nuggets. In the game, which took place on November 1 of that year, Jordan recorded 33 minutes and scored 17 points with five assists and five rebounds. Jordan gifted them to then-Nuggets ballboy TJ Lewis, who had kept them ever since. The shoes are also signed in red pen.

They were sold at Sotheby’s Icons of Excellence & Haute Luxury auction in Las Vegas, and the buyer was high-end sports card and memorabilia collector Nick Fiorella, Sotheby’s said in a statement.

“Michael Jordan and the Jordan Brand helped redefine what a signature line formed around an athlete could be,” Brahm Wachter, head of Sotheby’s Streetwear and Modern Collectables, said in a statement. “This pair, from Michael’s fifth NBA game, truly touches two worlds as the Nike Air Ship holds a special place in the hearts of sneakerheads as a precursor to the Air Jordan 1, but beyond that, it’s also simply an incredible artifact that dates back to the beginning of Michael Jordan’s rookie season.”

According to Sotheby’s, this pair of shoes ranks second among the most expensive shoes ever sold, behind the Yeezy 1 prototypes that rapper Kanye West wore to the 2008 Grammy Awards which sold for $1.8 million in April in a Sotheby’s private sale.

The 1984 season was the first of Jordan’s 15-year NBA career, during which he was a 14-time All-Star, 11-time All-NBA draft pick, 10-time scoring champion, five-time NBA MVP and a six-time NBA Finals champion, among many other accolades in his career.

A member of the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame, Jordan also won the 1984-85 NBA Rookie of the Year award, the same season he wore the shoes auctioned off Sunday. Jordan averaged 28.2 points, 6.5 rebounds and 5.9 assists in 82 games that season.
